Dance Competition IS Dance Education
All of us at Backstage Dance Company consider participation in dance competitions to be a reflection of our dance studio's solid reputation for quality. Not simply in the way we train our students to dance, but on how we influence them as people. Competing against the finest teams allows our teachers and students the opportunity to be inspired by the talent across the country. This is how Backstage Dance Company is continuously improving and evolving with the times while challenging ourselves to grow to new heights. Students who wish to pursue dance professionally have an opportunity to grow and develop their performance skills through competition. Competition allows the dancer to perform more frequently and teaches them the importance of thriving under pressure.
It is our goal to develop a genuine respect for dance as an art form in each of our Competition Dance Team members. With the right focus, the experience can be an excellent motivator of self-confidence. If the dancer feels good about their performance and understands that they are better each time, then they are truly growing through dance competition.
Hitting that stage and doing the best they can is what it's all about, what the dancer actually wins becomes secondary. At our dance studio, we instill an appreciation for other dancers and their dance studios.
Further information regarding pricing, attendance, dancer opportunities, etc. is available in our company handbook.
Who is eligible for Releve'?
Students ages 4 and up are eligible to audition for our dance companies. Memberships are by audition and/or invitation only. After your dancer auditions we will then evaluate what team would be best for them! Seeing as there are so many different levels of dancers we have different teams to accommodate everyone's skill level!
We take many things into consideration when forming our teams; including attitude and effort in class, performance quality, dedication and attendance, audition performance, recital performance, competition performance/readiness, ability to pick up and retain choreography, age, maturity level, the overall aesthetic appeal of the group, personalities, and much more. We do everything we can to place the dancers where they will most excel and shine. For some dancers, this means dancing with a group slightly younger or older than their current age. For some dancers, that means dancing with a group slightly more advanced or less advanced than their current level. But we ALWAYS have their best interest at heart.
Although we do not have a set number of slots, or number of groups predetermined before the 2020-2021 season, not everyone will make a team. Minimum skill requirements vary by age group. Placement on a current or previous years team does not guarantee future placement. If your child is not placed on a team, please do not take that as a sign that they shouldn’t continue with dance. It merely means that we did not have a group that fit their needs/level/etc. at this time. We are happy to discuss your child’s placement with you (or your child), and to recommend what classes they should take to prepare them for next seasons auditions.
