If my child auditions, is he/she guaranteed a spot on a competition team?
While we make every effort to include everyone, and we have multiple teams of different levels, sometimes we just don’t have a team suited for your dancer. We don’t want to put a dancer in a situation where they are being too challenged and fall behind, or on a team that is not challenging enough. In these situations we can recommend classes that may put them on a pathway to try out again the following year.
All of us at Backstage Dance Company consider participation in dance competitions to be a reflection of our dance studio's solid reputation for quality. Not simply in the way we train our students to dance, but on how we influence them as people.
It is our goal to develop a genuine respect for dance as an art form in each of our Competition Dance Team members. With the right focus, the experience can be an excellent motivator of self-confidence. If the dancer feels good about their performance and understands that they are better each time, then they are truly growing through dance competition.
Hitting that stage and doing the best they can is what it's all about, what the dancer actually wins becomes secondary. At our dance studio, we instill an appreciation for other dancers and their dance studios.
We are not out to beat anyone: we are out to motivate our kids and faculty by exposing them the highest caliber of talented dancers available. Only then are we going to produce the best dancers and dance teachers possible.
Dance Competition IS Dance Education
The Releve’ Team is Backstage Dance Company’s award winning competitive performing dance team under the artistic direction of Talia Childers and Team Directors led by BDC’s incredible teaching staff.
All Team Member Placement is decided by both age and skill level.
Company members are selected by annual auditions or invitation only. Releve’ dancers have the opportunity to compete on a regional and national level in Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Hip-Hop and Acro in solo, duet/trio, small group, and large group divisions. The company has had tremendous success over the years receiving numerous 1st place overall awards regionally and nationally. Many of the Releve’ soloists have won coveted regional and national dance competition scholarships and titles.
How will MY dancer benefit by being a Releve’ Company member?
This one could take awhile, because competition team is THAT beneficial!
*Exposure to world-renowned teachers and choreographers at competitions and conventions.
*Additional performance opportunities at local venues
*Classes with teachers and choreographers.
*Confidence!!! This is one of the best things for young dancers to have in not only the dance world but the real world too!!
The Releve’ Team is an Elite group of dancers who are not only talented, but are great role models and leaders for the studio and the community.
*Friends that will last a lifetime...they always say dance friends are FOREVER!
Who is eligible for Releve'?
Students ages 4 and up are eligible to audition for our dance companies. Memberships are by audition and/or invitation only. After your dancer auditions we will then evaluate what team would be best for them! Seeing as there are so many different levels of dancers we have different teams to accommodate everyone's skill level! Auditions for the Releve Team take place annually in May.
We take many things into consideration when forming our teams; including attitude and effort in class, performance quality, dedication and attendance, audition performance, recital performance, competition performance/readiness, ability to pick up and retain choreography, age, maturity level, the overall aesthetic appeal of the group, personalities, and much more. We do everything we can to place the dancers where they will most excel and shine. For some dancers, this means dancing with a group slightly younger or older than their current age. For some dancers, that means dancing with a group slightly more advanced or less advanced than their current level. But we ALWAYS have their best interest at heart.
Although we do not have a set number of slots, or number of groups predetermined before the 2019-2020 season, not everyone will make a team. Minimum skill requirements vary by age group. Placement on a current or previous years team does not guarantee future placement. If your child is not placed on a team, please do not take that as a sign that they shouldn’t continue with dance. It merely means that we did not have a group that fit their needs/level/etc. at this time. We are happy to discuss your child’s placement with you (or your child), and to recommend what classes they should take to prepare them for next seasons auditions.
